The aftermath of the attack left many countries concerned about the potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East, especially amidst the ongoing tensions over Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
In Europe, where both Jewish and Muslim communities reside, efforts have been made to address antisemitism and anti-Muslim sentiments following the Hamas attack and Israel’s subsequent response in Gaza, which has led to significant casualties and displacement. The Vatican joined in remembering the victims by collecting donations for Gaza and sharing a message of solidarity from Pope Francis, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and peace in the region.
Leaders from various countries expressed their support for Israel and condemned the attack, calling for the release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas. In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the Hamas attack and called for international efforts to prevent further escalation in the region. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni voiced her support for Israel’s right to self-defence while also urging respect for international law and expressing concern over the impact of Israeli military operations in Gaza on the Palestinian population.
French President Emmanuel Macron, along with other European politicians, reiterated their solidarity with the victims and their families, underscoring the need to combat antisemitism and promote tolerance. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended a vigil in Melbourne to honour the victims and stand in solidarity with the Jewish community. In Pakistan, a rally was held to protest Israeli airstrikes and show support for Palestinians in Gaza and Lebanon.
Japanese officials extended condolences to Israel and emphasised the need for the immediate release of all hostages, denouncing terrorism and urging compliance with international humanitarian law. The global commemorations serve as a reminder of the importance of unity, peace, and respect for human rights in the face of such tragedies.
