Mental health experts sound the alarm on Trump’s potential ‘cognitive decline’ as he’s ‘lost touch with reality’

Leading mental health experts, including a former White House doctor, have raised concerns about Donald Trump’s mental faculties, suggesting signs of “cognitive decline.” Several experts have voiced worries about the Republican presidential nominee, likening their concerns to those raised about President Joe Biden before he withdrew from the race. These experts caution that Trump appears to have “lost touch with reality,” evident in his “rambling” speeches and “erratic” debate performance. The calls for independent and objective cognitive testing are gaining momentum as the November election draws near.

After President Biden faced scrutiny over his cognitive abilities, experts noted alarming patterns in Trump’s behaviour. A professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College, Richard A. Friedman, expressed being “alarmed” by Trump’s performance in a recent debate, noting familiar patterns associated with cognitive decline. Dr. Ben Michaelis, a clinical psychologist, shared similar sentiments, emphasising that Trump seems to be in a vulnerable cognitive state.

Experts have highlighted instances where Trump’s speeches veer off into unrelated topics, which could be indicative of cognitive decline. They point to Trump’s tendency towards “logorrhoea,” excessive talking that can be linked to dementia. Observers noted Trump’s disjointed speeches and his inability to maintain a coherent train of thought, raising concerns about his mental state.

Psychiatrist Allen Frances, who previously did not observe symptoms of mental health disorders in Trump, now believes there has been a significant decline in Trump’s cognitive functioning. Frances noted that Trump’s statements during the debate, such as unfounded claims about infants being “executed” and other bizarre assertions, suggest a disconnection from reality.

Former White House physician Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman, advocating for mandatory cognitive assessments for presidential candidates, stressed the need for an age limit due to the critical nature of the presidency. Kuhlman highlighted the importance of cognitive testing in assessing a candidate’s mental fitness, especially regarding decision-making abilities and reasoning skills.

As mental health experts continue to express alarm over Trump’s cognitive state, the debate surrounding his mental acuity intensifies. Calls for thorough cognitive assessments and discussions on potential age limits for presidential candidates underscore the gravity of the situation. The Trump campaign has been contacted for comment on these concerns.

The issue of cognitive decline in political figures remains a subject of critical examination, as experts strive to ensure the mental fitness of leaders entrusted with significant responsibilities. The dialogue surrounding Trump’s cognitive health reflects broader concerns about the capacity of individuals in positions of power to fulfil their duties effectively and reliably.
