‘I was abused by my stepfather, step-grandfather and husband, but my mother said it didn’t matter’

A survivor of domestic and sexual abuse, Barbara*, bravely shares her harrowing story of enduring abuse from her stepfather, step-grandfather, and husband over two decades. Barbara finally disclosed the abuse to her mother, only to be met with a shocking response – her mother acknowledged the abuse but disregarded its significance, implying it was preferable for the abuse to stay within the family.

Barbara, now estranged from her mother, also faced resistance when trying to escape her abusive ex-husband, who controlled every aspect of her life, including her food intake and social interactions. Despite experiencing traumatic abuse, Barbara persevered, eventually finding the courage to speak up and leave her abusive marriage. She recalls the lack of support from authorities and her community when seeking help, emphasising the common theme of victims being ignored or disbelieved.

After enduring years of abuse that began at the vulnerable age of eight, Barbara described the horrifying experiences of physical and sexual abuse she endured at the hands of her step-grandfather, followed by her stepfather continuing the cycle of abuse. Even in her marriage, Barbara faced further abuse, including physical violence and sexual assault, with her husband coercing her into silence by manipulating her sense of worth and credibility.

Despite the immense challenges she faced, Barbara eventually found solace with a supportive partner who encouraged her to break free from the cycle of abuse. Recognising the ongoing issue of domestic abuse being overlooked in society, Barbara highlights the importance of providing safe spaces like refuges for victims to seek protection and support. She stresses the critical need for survivors to speak out and seek help, encouraging others in similar situations to reach out to a trusted individual or safe environment for support.

Barbara’s courageous journey sheds light on the pervasive nature of domestic abuse and the urgent need for society to listen, believe, and support survivors. Her resilience in overcoming trauma serves as a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges, underscoring the vital role of empathy, awareness, and advocacy in breaking the cycle of abuse.
