Interpol Launches Operation Identify Me to Unravel Mysteries Behind 46 Women Found Dead in Europe
Interpol is seeking the public’s help in identifying 46 women who were found dead across Europe in a bid to provide closure to families and bring justice to the victims. The initiative, known as Operation Identify Me, builds upon a previous 2023 project involving Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, now expanding to include France, Italy, and Spain.
The first phase of this operation focused on shedding light on 22 women whose remains were discovered over the years, resulting in around 1,800 tips from the public. One of these tips led to the identification of Rita Roberts, a British woman, 31 years after her body was found in Belgium, recognising her through a distinctive flower tattoo.
Rita Roberts left Cardiff, Wales in 1992 and went missing with her body being discovered in Antwerp later that year. The case was determined to be a homicide, highlighting the importance of ongoing efforts to identify these deceased women and seek justice for them.
Interpol emphasises the crucial role of the public in providing information and assistance in these investigations. In the new phase involving 46 cases, police forces will collaborate to utilise analytical tools and forensic techniques such as DNA profiling and facial reconstruction to uncover the identities of these women.
Black Notice alerts have been issued by Interpol on these cases, containing information on unidentified bodies that are traditionally circulated among law enforcement agencies. The organisation appeals to anyone with knowledge or details about these cases to come forward and help in this significant endeavour.
