Rutherglen’s MP is set to host a drop-in event at the town hall aimed at providing advice to older individuals on how to manage during the cold winter months. Michael Shanks, who recently supported the introduction of means-tested Winter Fuel Payments, has announced the upcoming “Preparing for Winter” drop-in session at Rutherglen Town Hall. The event will offer benefits and energy advice to residents in preparation for the winter season, including guidance on checking eligibility for pension credit.
Scheduled for October 25, the event will have stalls set up by various advice networks such as The Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Money Matters, charities like Healthy ‘n’ Happy Community Development Trust and LEAP Project, and SP Energy Networks. The main focus of the drop-in is to encourage individuals above state pension age to assess their eligibility for Pension Credit, a support mechanism for the most financially vulnerable pensioners. The low uptake of Pension Credit in recent years has been a significant concern, prompting this initiative to raise awareness and boost application rates.
Criticism arose last month directed at Michael Shanks for his vote in favour of reducing the number of elderly individuals automatically entitled to Winter Fuel Payment and transitioning it to a means-tested allowance. Defending his decision, Shanks highlighted the necessity of difficult choices due to financial constraints inherited from the previous government. He emphasised the commitment to ensuring support reaches those most in need, specifically targeting individuals on lower incomes and advocating for increased Pension Credit uptake.
Acknowledging constituents’ dissatisfaction with his vote, Shanks expressed readiness to address concerns from residents regarding home issues and energy bills as winter approaches.
