Former President Donald Trump has received criticism for his actions during an event commemorating the first anniversary of the deadly Hamas attacks on October 7. Attendees were shocked to see Trump smiling while holding a picture of Edan Alexander, an American who was kidnapped by Hamas during the tragic events a year ago. Edan grew up in New Jersey after being born in Tel Aviv and was among the hundreds of people taken hostage during the assault, which claimed the lives of over 1,200 individuals.
During the anniversary event, Trump, donning a kippah, participated in Jewish mourning practices and visited the gravesite of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. However, his wide grin in the photos shared online sparked outrage, with critics accusing him of being self-centred and insensitive. Attorney Daniel Miller expressed disbelief at Trump’s behaviour, stating that Trump only cares about himself, not the Jewish community or Israel. CNN medical analyst Jonathan Reiner and the group Republicans Against Trump also condemned Trump’s actions, labelling them as “sickening”.
Furthermore, Trump faced ridicule for offering to autograph a Jewish prayer book at the same event. This gesture was met with disapproval from various individuals, including former Democratic congressional candidates Randy Bryce and Dr Kathie Allen, who found it disrespectful to Judaism. Edan Alexander, who moved to the US as a baby, was serving in the Golani Brigade close to Gaza when he was taken captive by Hamas. The 20-year-old called his mother on the morning of October 7, reporting gunshots before being captured.
Amidst the controversy surrounding Trump’s conduct at the anniversary event, criticisms continue to mount against the former president. Despite his attendance to honour the memory of the victims and hostages of the Hamas attacks, Trump’s actions have sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters.
