A Scottish dad from Cowie, Stirling, who fell seriously ill in a Turkish hospital, has been successfully flown back home to Scotland, bringing relief to his family. Bob Carrick, described as “one of life’s good guys,” had taken ill while abroad on September 21 and underwent an operation in Turkey, but faced further complications. His family, struggling with insurers to fund a medical flight back home, eventually resorted to launching an online fundraiser to cover the estimated £45,000 cost. While the family had to pay over £26,000 for hospital fees initially, they managed to raise almost £12,000 through the fundraiser.
In a recent update, Bob’s sister-in-law, Christine Young, confirmed that Bob’s insurance had finally agreed to cover the cost of his medical flight back to Scotland. Expressing gratitude for the support received through donations and well wishes, Christine highlighted the challenges they faced due to delays in insurance decisions during a stressful and upsetting period. Bob, aged 50, was admitted first for internal bleeding and later with heart failure, adding pressure on the family as they awaited insurance approvals.
The family’s GoFundMe initiative, which garnered significant local backing, aimed to ensure Bob’s safe return home, emphasising his positive character and the support he provides to others. Despite the financial strain and uncertainties, the family remained determined to bring Bob back, underscoring the need for improvements in the travel insurance process for swift decision-making during emergencies. The successful funding of Bob’s medical flight marks a positive turning point for the family, who are now looking forward to his return and continued recovery in Scotland.
This heartwarming story reflects the resilience and unity of a family in the face of adversity, reminding us of the power of community support and unwavering determination in times of crisis. As Bob makes his journey back home, his loved ones eagerly anticipate his safe arrival, grateful for the generosity and solidarity shown by friends, well-wishers, and strangers alike during a challenging period of uncertainty and financial strain.
