Professor Tim Spector says household staple is ‘probably healthier’ than we think

In a surprising twist to the ongoing debate about pasta’s nutritional value, Professor Tim Spector, a renowned expert in nutrition, has given the popular household staple a vote of confidence. The esteemed professor, known for his work in genetic epidemiology at King’s College London and as the creator of the Zoe health app, believes that pasta is healthier than commonly perceived, provided it is prepared correctly. Despite its reputation for being high in carbs and starch, Prof Spector asserts that pasta can be a nutritious meal choice when paired with the right ingredients.

According to Prof Spector, pasta can offer a range of health benefits, including a good source of protein, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. He emphasises that pasta has the potential to significantly boost one’s fibre intake, which can help regulate cholesterol levels, promote a feeling of fullness, and aid in weight management. The key, he suggests, is in how pasta is selected and prepared. Opting for wholegrain varieties can double the fibre content compared to white pasta, while alternative options like spelt, lentil, or chickpea pasta can further increase protein intake.

Furthermore, Prof Spector recommends combining pasta with sources of protein, healthy fats, and fibre to enhance satiety and stabilise blood sugar levels. By incorporating ingredients such as cannellini beans for added fibre and plant protein, as well as extra virgin olive oil to slow glucose absorption, a pasta dish can become a balanced and nutritious meal. He also advises incorporating a variety of plant-based ingredients into pasta sauces to support gut health, citing the benefits of fibre, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals in promoting overall well-being.

Polyphenols, beneficial compounds found in plants, play a crucial role in feeding beneficial gut bacteria, protecting cells from damage, reducing inflammation, and improving insulin sensitivity. These compounds contribute to the overall health-promoting properties of pasta and plant-based ingredients. Moreover, official health recommendations align with Prof Spector’s perspective on pasta. The NHS emphasises the importance of starchy foods like pasta as a source of energy, nutrients such as fibre, calcium, iron, and B vitamins, all of which are essential for a balanced diet and overall health.

Senior dietitian Victoria Taylor echoes these sentiments, highlighting the nutritional benefits of standard dried pasta and recommending tomato-based sauces over creamy options for a healthier choice. She advises caution regarding salt content in ready-made sauces, particularly those with high saturated fat content. By making informed choices about pasta and accompanying ingredients, individuals can maximise the nutritional value of their meals and support their overall well-being. Prof Spector’s insights challenge conventional beliefs about pasta, positioning it as a potentially healthier and more nutritious food option than previously thought.
