New update for millions of taxpayers ahead of crucial deadline this month

Millions of taxpayers are getting a new update as a crucial deadline approaches this month. The HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is recommending Self Assessment customers to make use of online guidance as they prepare for the upcoming deadlines for their 2023/24 tax returns. The deadline for paper returns is set for October 31, 2024, while online returns must be submitted by January 31, 2025.

More than 12 million taxpayers are expected to complete online Self Assessments by the January deadline. For those opting for paper returns, time is running out as the October deadline looms. HMRC advises taxpayers to check online at GOV.UK for answers to most queries and utilise their online services. While the Self Assessment helpline and webchat services are available for assistance, taxpayers can find a wealth of information and resources online.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, emphasised the importance of providing support to customers throughout the tax filing process to ensure accuracy. The top five reasons for contacting the HMRC helpline include queries about Self Assessment registration, tax return completion status, and repayment concerns. It is crucial for new Self Assessment filers to register to receive their Unique Taxpayer Reference before submitting their tax return.

Taxpayers may need to file a tax return even if they pay taxes through PAYE, especially if they fall under specific criteria such as being self-employed, earning untaxed income, or receiving certain benefits. HMRC urges individuals to have all necessary information ready to file their tax returns early to prevent last-minute stress. The department offers various online resources, including YouTube videos, to guide taxpayers through the process, especially first-time filers.

To protect against scams, HMRC advises individuals to be cautious of unsolicited emails, calls, or texts asking for personal or financial information. Taxpayers are also warned never to share their HMRC login details to prevent potential misuse. By staying vigilant and using official HMRC channels, taxpayers can ensure a smooth and secure tax filing experience.

In conclusion, as the tax deadlines approach, HMRC encourages taxpayers to take advantage of online resources and guidance to complete their Self Assessment returns accurately and on time. By being proactive and informed, taxpayers can avoid unnecessary stress and potential scams while fulfilling their tax obligations.
