South Lanarkshire libraries have been recognised for their outstanding podcasting project, as they secure a nomination for a prestigious industry award. The initiative, known as Lending Voices, offers local residents and organisations the opportunity to borrow recording and editing equipment to create podcasts. This project aims to democratise podcasting by making it accessible to everyone in South Lanarkshire.
The Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) has shortlisted the Lending Voices project in the Project Excellence category for their annual awards ceremony next month. The project provides portable studio kits with microphones, headphones, and a laptop for recording, publishing, and editing podcasts. Residents can access these kits from any of the 23 libraries in South Lanarkshire.
Through Lending Voices, a diverse range of podcast episodes has been produced, covering topics such as stories of local women, yoga, Spanish sessions, interviews with Lanarkshire authors, and nature projects in the area. The project also offers taster sessions for beginners to familiarise themselves with the equipment and explore creative ideas.
South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, which oversees the project, highlights the impact of Lending Voices in enriching local culture and fostering a sense of community. The initiative has facilitated partnerships with various groups and organisations, broadening engagement and participation in podcasting.
Library staff actively encourage contributions from local groups, charities, and initiatives, emphasising that technical knowledge and equipment costs should not be barriers to podcasting. By providing tools, support, and learning opportunities, the project aims to amplify the voices and stories of the people of South Lanarkshire.
Alongside South Lanarkshire libraries, other nominees in the award category include library projects from West Dunbartonshire, Perth & Kinross, and the National Library of Scotland. The SLIC chair, Alan Clarke, commended the dedication and creativity of the individuals behind these innovative library projects, emphasising the positive impact they have on their communities.
The annual industry awards celebrate excellence in library services across Scotland, with a focus on initiatives that have made a significant positive contribution to their communities. Winners of the awards receive recognition, a trophy, and a cash prize to further support their work in enhancing library services.
