Anya Shrubsole is setting her sights on increasing the female playing membership of MCC as part of her new role. The former England bowler has been appointed as the chair of the women’s players and fixtures sub-committee and is eager to make a significant impact.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the new position, Shrubsole stated, “I’m really excited, really honoured to be chair of the committee.” She acknowledged the learning curve ahead of her and highlighted the importance of seeking guidance from those more knowledgeable in the field. Recognising the positive developments already in place, she emphasised the need to further expand the women’s playing section of MCC and cultivate a vibrant community of players.
With a focus on increasing playing membership and raising awareness, Shrubsole outlined her goals for the MCC. Despite the progress made since female members were first welcomed in 1998, there is still work to be done towards achieving gender equality within the club. The current membership stands at 980 female members, with ongoing efforts to bridge the gap with male membership numbers.
Having retired from international cricket two years ago after a successful career spanning 14 years, Shrubsole has observed significant advancements in the women’s game. From equal match fees for England’s women to parity in prize money at major tournaments, the sport continues to make strides towards equality.
Shrubsole commended the upcoming changes in the domestic structure and the increasing opportunities for female cricketers, noting the growth and potential for lucrative careers in the sport. Reflecting on the progress made in recent years, she acknowledged that there is still room for improvement, particularly in terms of salaries across all levels of cricket.
