The family of Khasha Smith gathered for a solemn vigil to mark one year since the tragic mum was last seen alive. The heartbreaking event took place as the mum-of-three was on a FaceTime call with a friend on October 10, 2023. Despite extensive investigations, police have come to the grim conclusion that Khasha is no longer alive. A suspect, John Byrne, 39, has been charged with her murder and with attempting to pervert the course of justice, although her body has yet to be found.
Khasha’s family organised a moving vigil at Saughton Park in Edinburgh to honour her memory ahead of the anniversary of her disappearance. Her aunt, Carrie Duke, expressed the family’s anguish over the past year, describing it as a “brutal nightmare” and reaffirming their unwavering commitment to finding Khasha. Loved ones and friends came together to share memories and pay tribute to Khasha’s life, with Carrie highlighting the outpouring of love and support as truly heartwarming.
In a poignant gesture, the family placed a memorial bench for Khasha in Saughton Walled Garden, providing a special place for her mum and daughters to feel close to her. The fundraising efforts continue in the hope of giving Khasha a proper farewell once she is returned to her loved ones. Khasha was officially reported missing by her family in January this year, leading to a large-scale search operation involving numerous officers at her Calder Grove residence and the surrounding area.
Khasha’s daughter, Calley, bravely appealed to the public earlier this year alongside her grandmother, Nicola Neil, urging anyone with information to come forward. Detective Chief Inspector Bob Williamson of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team echoed the appeal, emphasising the importance of finding answers for Khasha’s family. He underlined the significance of even the smallest piece of information in solving the case and urged anyone with details to contact the authorities promptly.
