A pregnant mum, Kira Chambers, has expressed feeling let down by the authorities as she continues to reside in a mould-ridden council flat. She revealed that she and her three-year-old daughter, Tilly-Mae, have been experiencing chesty coughs due to the poor conditions of their home managed by Derby Homes. The mould problems were first identified in their two-bedroom flat a year ago and have been reported to the council multiple times. Kira mentioned that the council’s response so far has been a “short-term solution to a long-term problem”. Despite the council offering wall-washing services, which have been carried out several times, the mould keeps reappearing, especially with the colder months approaching.
Kira disclosed to Derbyshire Live that she feels helpless and unsure of what to do next as the situation is affecting her daughter’s health. Doctors have warned both her and her daughter about the detrimental effects of living in the flat, and with her son due to be born prematurely in eight weeks, she is anxious about the living conditions. She temporarily moved herself and her daughter to her mother’s place, but due to housing benefit regulations, she cannot stay away from the flat for more than three days. The council proposed installing a vent, offered a free dehumidifier, and replacements for damaged furniture, though Kira believes the ventilation should have been done earlier.
Expressing her frustration, Kira stressed the urgency of the situation, especially with her son’s imminent arrival. She emphasised the impact the conditions have had on her and her children’s health and highlighted her concerns for others facing similar challenges. Kira expressed her hope for temporary accommodation until the mould issue is resolved, citing the difficulties she has faced over the past year, particularly in the last few months while being pregnant and managing her responsibilities as a single mother.
In response, a spokesperson for Derby City Council, which oversees Derby Homes, stated that they are actively working with Kira to address the issues in her flat. The initial inspection did not reveal any property-related causes, but it was noted that better heating and ventilation are needed to reduce condensation levels. While previous attempts to address the problem were unsuccessful, efforts to find suitable dates to complete the work are ongoing. The council assured that they will collaborate with Kira to monitor the situation, resolve recurring issues, and address any further concerns she may have.
