UK and US pledge to work more closely on child online safety

The UK and the United States have come together to intensify their collaboration on child online safety by releasing their first joint statement on the subject. In a bid to enhance cooperation, the two governments have committed to establishing a new joint working group that will facilitate the sharing of expertise and evidence.

The joint statement highlights the dedication of both nations to ensuring that technology is used for the betterment of society. It emphasises the importance of social media companies fulfilling their responsibilities to uphold human rights and provide safe online experiences, particularly for children.

While the UK has already passed the Online Safety Act, which is anticipated to take effect next year, the US has a Kids Online Health and Safety task force in operation. The Online Safety Act in the UK will mandate platforms to safeguard children’s well-being, implement measures to mitigate risks, and actively detect and remove illegal content.

Peter Kyle, the Technology Secretary, expressed the significance of international collaboration in a digital landscape without borders. He underlined the necessity of working closely with key allies like the US, home to major tech companies. Kyle stressed that the joint statement signifies a shift towards creating a safer online environment for future generations.

Gina Raimondo, the US Secretary of Commerce, emphasised the increased exposure of children to online platforms for learning and socialising, leading to heightened risks. Raimondo highlighted the joint efforts with UK partners to safeguard children’s privacy, safety, and mental well-being, as well as combatting youth online exploitation. The historic agreement aims to allocate additional resources to aid children and young people in thriving online both domestically and internationally.

The partnership between the UK and the US underscores a shared commitment to prioritising child online safety and leveraging their combined efforts to address challenges in the digital realm.
