Inside Hurricane Milton’s 28-foot waves as storm approached Florida

Drone footage captured a breathtaking sight of a 28-foot-high wave inside Hurricane Milton as the powerful storm made its way through the Gulf of Mexico towards Florida on 9th October. The footage, recorded by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) device, depicted the wave forming amidst wind gusts of almost 76mph approximately 40 nautical miles from the centre of Hurricane Milton.

Hurricane Milton eventually reached Florida’s western coast near Siesta Key as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 120mph. Following its landfall, the hurricane was downgraded to a Category 1, with sustained winds of 85mph. This dramatic drone footage serves as a stark reminder of the immense power and force of nature during a hurricane.
