Neighbours of a beloved married couple are in shock after the pair, along with their cocker spaniel, were found shot dead in their semi-detached home in a quiet Cardiff suburb. The bodies of Stephen Jefferies, 74, and his wife Christine, 72, were discovered by their daughter after locals noticed their blinds remained closed.
South Wales Police recovered a rifle at the scene and confirmed they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the deaths that have deeply affected the close-knit community of Trowbridge. Christine Carey, a neighbour who had known the couple for almost 30 years, expressed her disbelief at the tragic event.
Describing the couple as “truly lovely,” Carey recalled how they never raised their voices and were actively involved in community activities such as being members of the neighbourhood watch and caring for injured birds. Stephen, a retired council welder, was also dedicated to grassroots rugby and regularly assisted the Welsh Rugby Union as a referee and assessor.
The couple’s routine walks with their dog and shared hobbies, including tending to their allotment and helping out neighbors in need, have left the community in mourning. Despite the shocking nature of their deaths, there appears to be no immediate explanation for the tragic outcome.
DCI Lianne Rees of South Wales Police extended sympathies to the family and friends of the Jefferies and assured ongoing support for the investigation.
