The Scottish SPCA has recently undertaken a monumental rescue effort, saving over 200 dogs in a 10-day period. This significant operation is believed to be one of the largest intakes of dogs within a single week in the organisation’s 185-year history. The animals rescued have been victims of neglect, living in appalling conditions that have necessitated urgent veterinary treatment for issues such as dental disease, infected ears, and severely matted fur.
The number of dogs saved in this recent operation marks a 380% increase compared to the same period last year when 45 dogs were rescued. The surge in rescues has been prompted by cases where animals were found living in deplorable conditions, leading to ongoing investigations by the Scottish SPCA. Additionally, many of the rescued dogs were pregnant, further adding to the urgency of the situation.
Due to the sheer volume of dogs requiring care, the Scottish SPCA is now facing a financial challenge. The costs associated with providing basic healthcare, vaccinations, and necessary days of care per dog amount to approximately £1,223.80. Laura McIntyre, Head of Rescue and Prevention at the Scottish SPCA, emphasised the urgent need for support in managing this unprecedented influx of animals.
Jennie Macdonald, Head of Rehoming and Fostering, highlighted the focus on providing essential care to the rescued dogs and the subsequent task of finding them suitable homes. Foster homes are urgently required to accommodate these dogs temporarily while permanent placements are arranged. Donations are being sought to fund the care and rehabilitation of these animals, with every contribution making a meaningful difference to their recovery and future prospects.
