Covid XEC: What are the symptoms of new virus strain?

A new strain of Covid known as XEC has emerged in the UK, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reporting a rapid increase in cases. This strain is a combination of the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 variants, with the admission rate for XEC-positive patients rising to 4.5 per 100,000 people in the week leading up to October 6, up from 3.7 the previous week. The UKHSA believes that the XEC strain is more transmissible due to multiple mutations and exhibits symptoms similar to other Covid variants, such as tiredness, headaches, a sore throat, and high temperatures.

Although self-isolation is no longer mandatory in the UK, the NHS recommends that individuals who test positive for Covid avoid contact with others for at least five days. Additionally, it is advised to steer clear of more vulnerable individuals for 10 days to minimize the risk to them. People experiencing symptoms are encouraged to wait for them to subside before resuming normal activities.

The symptoms of the Covid XEC strain resemble those of common cold and flu-like illnesses, including a high temperature, aches, tiredness, and a cough or sore throat. The NHS has started offering autumn Covid booster shots to the most vulnerable groups, including over-65s, individuals with certain health conditions, pregnant women, those residing in care homes, frontline NHS and social care workers, and others eligible for the jab. Appointments for the booster shot can be arranged through various channels like the NHS App, GPs, pharmacies, drop-in clinics, or by calling 119.
