**Twynholm Rural Members Fascinated by Donald Armstrong’s Cycling Journey to New Zealand**
Members of the Twynholm Rural community recently gathered to listen to an extraordinary tale of adventure shared by Donald Armstrong. The event, hosted by Jean Adams, President of Twynholm Rural, drew a crowd of both members and visitors. Before introducing Donald Armstrong, Jean paid homage to three late members of the group: Sally Galloway, Joan Howson, and Lilias Service.
Donald Armstrong, a resident of Langbarns, regaled the audience with his cycling expedition to New Zealand to visit his sister and her family, emphasizing his decision to find a more challenging route than simply flying. Donald embarked on his journey using his existing bike, opting not to purchase an expensive one. Accompanied by a few friends for a part of the trip, Donald’s adventure was filled with twists and turns.
Throughout his presentation, Donald showcased numerous photos on the hall screen, depicting his experiences during the trip. While cycling was his primary mode of transport, he occasionally had to rely on ferries, trains, planes, or buses. Donald vividly recounted encounters with kind strangers who assisted him by drying his clothes and providing food when he was caught in the rain.
From enjoying porridge to discovering overnight oats, Donald shared anecdotes of welding a tractor door on a farm, aiding a farmer in gathering escaped cows, and navigating route mishaps that added unexpected mileage. Despite facing challenges like scalded legs and dehydration, Donald persisted, undeterred by gear and wheel bearing issues.
After flying to Koh Cheng Island and renting a scooter, Donald eventually reached his destination in New Zealand, much to the relief of his awaiting family. The audience was captivated by Donald’s storytelling, expressing amazement at his resilience and determination throughout the journey.
The event concluded with a heartfelt appreciation extended to Donald by Val Farrell, followed by routine meeting proceedings. As members departed, discussions ensued regarding transportation arrangements for the upcoming Shawhead Rural gathering.
