A 28-year-old Colombian woman who tragically died after falling overboard from the MSC Virtuosa cruise ship has been identified. The incident occurred near the Channel Islands, specifically north of Les Casquets rocks, west of Alderney, in the early hours of a Saturday. This prompted a significant search and rescue operation involving the French coastguard and navy, as well as an air search plane, which ultimately led to the discovery of the woman’s body in the water.
The woman was named as Jessica Andrea Gómez Granda by the Colombian consulate in London, with the identification process coordinated with authorities in Paris and her family duly informed. Following the distressing event, passengers on the MSC Virtuosa shared their shock at the unfolding tragedy. One passenger, identified only as Neil, recounted hearing an alarm ring three times, signifying that a person had gone overboard. He described the atmosphere as tense and later learned that the crew was searching for the missing passenger, causing a delay in the ship’s arrival in Southampton.
The MSC Virtuosa, a cruise ship flying the Maltese flag capable of accommodating thousands of passengers and crew members, arrived in Southampton from Cartagena, Spain, around 8 am that Saturday.
