Israel Launches Airstrikes on Beirut, Mayor Killed | The Independent
Israel has resumed airstrikes on Beirut after five days, resulting in the death of a city mayor during intense strikes in southern Lebanon. The Prime Minister of the country condemned the attacks as deliberately targeting a municipal council meeting.
The strikes in Beirut and southern Lebanon happened amidst US concerns about escalating death tolls and the fear of a potential all-out war in the region. Israel has been targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon while engaging in conflict with Hamas, also supported by Tehran, in Gaza. The Israeli military confirmed hitting the city of Nabatieh, resulting in the death of Mayor Ahmed Kahil and four others. Eyewitnesses described scenes of frantic terror as multiple airstrikes hit the area within a short span of time.
Israel targeted dozens of Hezbollah locations in Nabatieh and destroyed underground infrastructure. They also conducted a strike on an underground Hezbollah weapons stockpile in the southern suburb of Dahiyeh in Beirut. The Israeli military stated that precautions were taken to minimise harm to civilians, including providing advance warnings to the population in the targeted areas.
The Lebanese Prime Minister accused Israel of intentionally striking a municipal council meeting, raising concerns about the need for a ceasefire. In response to Western countries’ calls for a ceasefire, the US reiterated its support for Israel and announced plans to send aid.
Despite international efforts to broker peace, the conflict between Israel and Lebanon, as well as Gaza, continues to escalate. The region has witnessed significant civilian casualties, with reports of 15 bodies recovered from a building in southern Lebanon. Qana, the town where the strike occurred, has a history of civilian deaths in previous conflicts with Hezbollah.
The recent airstrikes mark a resurgence of violence in the region after a short period of calm. The situation remains tense as both sides exchange fire across borders, leading to further casualties and displacements. International bodies like the UN have expressed concerns over the escalating conflict and called for restraint from all parties involved.
