New England manager, Thomas Tuchel, has addressed concerns regarding his nationality, stating that his German passport will not hinder his success in leading the national team. Tuchel, 51, signed an 18-month contract and aims to dispel any doubts surrounding a foreign coach taking charge of the English team, following Gareth Southgate.
During a press conference at Wembley, Tuchel acknowledged the criticism but emphasised his passion for the English Premier League and the country. He expressed his commitment to proving his capability as a manager and showcasing his love for England through results and playing style. Tuchel, known for his previous management roles at clubs like Borussia Dortmund, Paris St Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich, becomes the third non-Englishman to hold the position of England boss.
Addressing the topic of singing the national anthem, Tuchel mentioned that it is a personal decision, with Lee Carsley, the interim manager before him, also opting not to sing. Tuchel highlighted his respect for the country and stated that he has yet to decide whether he will sing the anthem. Anthony Barry, an English coach who worked with Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern, will support him in his new role as England’s assistant coach.
Tuchel is set to take charge as England manager on January 1, preparing for the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign. Despite the relatively short contract duration, Tuchel is focused on delivering results and qualifying for the World Cup. He plans to work towards achieving success at the tournament and beyond, highlighting the importance of maintaining focus and effective communication within the team.
When asked about his interactions with England captain Harry Kane, whom he previously signed for Bayern Munich, Tuchel mentioned that he had not spoken to Kane or Southgate during the confidential selection process. Tuchel expressed admiration for Kane but deferred decisions regarding the captaincy, showing respect for Carsley’s upcoming camp in November.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham expressed confidence in Tuchel’s appointment, affirming that the aim is to win major tournaments under his leadership. Bullingham praised Tuchel as one of the top coaches globally, with the addition of an English coach as his assistant providing England with the best chance to succeed in the upcoming World Cup.
