Tommy Briggs, an 86-year-old resident at Riverside View care home in Dundee, had the joy of rekindling his lifelong love for motorbikes following a dream ride arranged by a local motorcycle group. The heartwarming experience came to fruition after Tommy shared with the care home staff how he used to ride motorcycles in his younger days.
The initiative to make Tommy’s dream come true was taken by nursing assistant Francine, who reached out to the Dundee Scooter Review (DSR) to organise a visit for Tommy. Hoolie, the Head of the DSR, brought a motorcycle to the care home and invited Tommy to take a seat, much to his delight.
For Tommy, the visit from the DSR group meant more than just a day with motorbikes; it symbolised a reconnection with a beloved hobby and a reminder that it’s never too late to indulge in past passions. The staff at Riverside View exemplified their commitment to personalized care by going above and beyond to fulfil Tommy’s wish, regardless of age or abilities.
Expressing his gratitude, Tommy shared, “I never thought I would sit on a bike again; I cannot believe this! Thank you so much.” Home Manager, Clair McDonald, emphasised the importance of promoting individualised care and enhancing the residents’ well-being at Riverside View. She recounted the emotional moment when Tommy rode the motorcycle and shared stories with the DSR team leader and staff.
Tommy’s wife, Peggy, was equally ecstatic to see her husband reliving his former passions. In response to Tommy’s revived enthusiasm, plans are underway to arrange a motorcycle with a sidecar for him to join another local bike group, which includes the care home’s maintenance officer.
