Scientists searching distant solar system for possible alien radio signals

Scientists are on the lookout for possible alien radio signals in a distant solar system, according to a recent study reported by The Independent. The research involved scanning the Trappist-1 system for signs of alien technology, marking the longest search of its kind, lasting a total of 28 hours.

Despite the extensive scanning efforts, astronomers did not detect any signals indicating the presence of alien life within the star system. However, the study is seen as a crucial step in refining techniques that could potentially lead to the identification of alien signals in the future.

Trappist-1 is a red dwarf star situated approximately 40 light years away and is home to a series of planets believed to offer favourable conditions for sustaining life. The abundance of planets in this system makes it a prime candidate for the search for extraterrestrial life.

During the study, researchers utilised the Allen Telescope Array to focus on planet-planet occultations (PPOs), which occur when planets pass in front of each other. Such moments are considered ideal for detecting radio signals that could indicate communication between planets.

The scanning process yielded millions of potential signals, with 11,000 signals identified as promising candidates for further analysis. Among these, 2,264 signals coincided with PPO windows. However, none of the signals were found to originate from non-human sources.

Despite the lack of conclusive evidence of alien technology, scientists remain optimistic about the progress made in refining detection methods. The study serves as a valuable test for systems that may eventually lead to the discovery of alien life forms. Additionally, it aids in honing the techniques used for future searches, directing attention to specific locations and times for signal detection.

Nick Tusay, a graduate student research fellow at Penn State University, emphasised the significance of the research in advancing the detection capabilities for alien signals. He highlights the potential for upcoming technologies, such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), to enhance the detection of signals from extraterrestrial civilisations.

The findings of the study have been detailed in a paper set for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, currently available online as a preprint under the title ‘A Radio Technosignature Search of TRAPPIST-1 with the Allen Telescope Array’.
