Massachusetts restaurant receives threats after serving WW2 re-enactors dressed as Nazis

A Massachusetts restaurant faced backlash and threats following an incident where they served two World War II re-enactors dressed as Nazi soldiers. Kith and Kin, located in Hudson, issued an apology for the oversight and later decided to temporarily close amidst safety concerns for their staff.

The controversy unfolded when a group of “living historians” from the local American Heritage Museum visited the restaurant on a Saturday evening. Among the group were individuals in various WW2-themed attire, including US soldiers, a military nurse, and a couple dressed as SS soldiers. Reflecting on the situation, Kith and Kin admitted that they should have requested the customers to change their clothing before being seated. The restaurant acknowledged that while they were aware the group were re-enactors, they underestimated how other diners might perceive the costumes, especially in a time where anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Kith and Kin expressed regret over unintentionally causing offence and stated they would never knowingly allow individuals with discriminatory beliefs onto their premises. The restaurant, described as a small, family-owned business, emphasised their commitment to continual improvement and learning from mistakes.

Following significant media coverage of the incident, Kith and Kin reported an escalation in harassment and threats directed towards them. As a result, they announced a temporary closure until October 15 for the safety of their staff. The American Heritage Museum also expressed disappointment in the actions of the re-enactors, noting that wearing such costumes outside of the appropriate setting was not in line with their protocols.

Despite clarifying that the incident did not constitute a hate crime, Museum Trustee Gary Lewi labelled it as “stupidity” given the current climate of increased anti-Semitic violence and the presence of neo-Nazis. Lewi highlighted that the museum strictly governs the use of WW2-era costumes and stated that the protocols had been breached by the actors. As a response to the controversy, the museum announced plans to reinforce costume guidelines and apply stricter consequences for violations.

In light of the incident, the Massachusetts restaurant and the American Heritage Museum have faced scrutiny and criticism for their roles in inadvertently fostering an environment that could be perceived as insensitive or offensive. The episode serves as a reminder of the importance of sensitivity and awareness in a time when historical symbols and narratives can evoke deep emotions and reactions in society.
