A brown dwarf discovered 30 years ago is actually twins circling each other

A celestial object discovered three decades ago has turned out to be twin orbs orbiting each other, a recent study has found. Known as Gliese 229B, this object, which was the first brown dwarf ever discovered, has intrigued scientists with its dim appearance despite its mass. Brown dwarfs are often referred to as failed stars as they are lighter than stars but heavier than gas giant planets.

Researchers used the Very Large Telescope in Chile to gather light and chemical data, which revealed that Gliese 229B is actually a pair of twins whirling closely around each other. This discovery has resolved a long-standing mystery surrounding the object. The twins are in orbit around a small star located approximately 18 light-years away, with a light-year measuring about 5.8 trillion miles.

While astronomers have previously identified other brown dwarf pairs, these twins are distinctive for their exceptionally close proximity. They complete an orbit around each other every 12 days, a period shorter than the time it takes for the moon to circle the Earth. Rebecca Oppenheimer, a co-author of the study from the American Museum of Natural History, highlighted the significance of this finding in showcasing the diversity of celestial systems beyond our own.

The research unveiling the twin nature of Gliese 229B was published in the prestigious journal Nature. Co-author Jerry Xuan from the California Institute of Technology suggested that this discovery implies the potential existence of other concealed brown dwarf pairs in the universe. This intriguing revelation sheds light on the fascinating complexity of the cosmos and underscores the uniqueness of various solar systems.
