Prince William has faced questions about his ownership of multiple homes as he asserts that he is the right person to lead a homelessness project. The Duke of Cambridge is set to feature in an upcoming ITV documentary that follows his Homewards initiative, aimed at tackling homelessness in six locations across the UK.
Responding to queries about his suitability for the role due to his personal property portfolio, which includes Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, Anmer Hall mansion in Norfolk, and Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace, Prince William stated that he is solely focused on helping those in need. He emphasised that everyone should have the right to a safe and stable home, and he sees his position as a royal as a means to influence and support those who require assistance.
The documentary, titled “Prince William: We Can End Homelessness,” chronicles the prince’s efforts during the initial year of his Homewards initiative. William, who also inherited the Duchy of Cornwall estate, valued at over £1 billion, and benefits from its annual profits, has outlined plans to construct homes on Duchy land to combat homelessness. In Nansledan, Newquay, 24 homes are set to be built along with comprehensive support services to aid local residents in securing permanent housing.
Having long been an advocate for homeless causes, Prince William became the royal patron of charity The Passage after visiting one of its shelters with his late mother, Princess Diana. His commitment to understanding homelessness led him to spend a night on the streets during Christmas in 2009 and engage with a Big Issue seller in recent years.
The Homewards project aims to provide tailored solutions to homelessness in identified locations such as Newport, Lambeth, Belfast, Aberdeen, Sheffield, and three towns in Dorset. Its overarching goal is to create a blueprint for effectively eradicating homelessness, ensuring that it becomes a rare and transient issue. The documentary is scheduled to air on October 30th and 31st on ITV1 and other associated channels.
