The White House has announced that federal assistance nearing $2 billion has been approved for six states affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton. The federal government has been facing pressure to demonstrate swift assistance to areas severely impacted by the consecutive hurricanes in late September and early October. The aid is crucial in light of the government’s warnings of the necessity for additional funding to support ongoing relief efforts.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), responsible for disaster response, has been combating misinformation since Hurricane Helene struck Florida. Misleading claims have circulated, fuelled by figures like former President Donald Trump, particularly in the lead-up to the presidential election. Hurricane Helene, a devastating Category 4 storm, made landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast on September 26, causing immense damage across multiple states. Hurricane Milton followed two weeks later, compounding the destruction.
Hurricane response has taken centre stage in the upcoming presidential election, with both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris vying to showcase their aptitude in handling such crises. The approved funds include allocations for individual residents, such as rental reimbursements for temporary accommodation and direct financial support for essentials like food and diapers. Additionally, public assistance funds cover expenses like debris removal and repairs to critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and schools.
Of the total sum, approximately $911 million has been allocated towards Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, while about $620 million has been designated for areas affected by Hurricane Milton. Aside from direct relief, funds have also been directed towards agricultural assistance. The six states benefiting from this funding include Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
In related news, it was reported that the Small Business Administration has depleted its funds for disaster assistance loans aimed at aiding small businesses, homeowners, and renters. Despite reassurances from FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell regarding the agency’s current capacity to address the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, discussions around the necessity for supplemental funding from Congress persist. Without additional financial support, FEMA may have to limit payouts for past disasters to prioritise life-saving activities during new emergencies.
