The family asserts that their son received detention and a negative impact on his grade due to these allegations.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court, argues that the accusations have caused “irreparable harm” to the teenager, especially considering his aspirations to apply to prestigious colleges and universities based on his exemplary academic record. Additionally, the student was reportedly denied induction into the National Honor Society as a consequence of the AI usage. The family is requesting that the school exclude the zero grade from calculations and amend the student’s Social Studies grade to a ‘B.’
The legal filing highlights the lack of clear guidelines within the school handbook regarding the use of AI, with the parents contending that administrators, faculty, and students were unprepared to address instances involving such technology. The code of discipline at Hingham High School defines cheating as any dishonest or unfair practices aimed at gaining an advantage, explicitly mentioning unauthorized use of technology, including AI, during assessments as a violation.
