Budget 2024: Martin Lewis sends warning over Buy Now Pay Later crackdown

Finance expert Martin Lewis has raised concerns about the recent crackdown on Buy Now Pay Later schemes. The well-known money advisor has warned consumers about the importance of being cautious when using such services.

The government has announced new regulations for Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) products in order to protect millions of shoppers. Lewis praised this move, highlighting the need for regulation in an area that has long been overlooked. He expressed his satisfaction with the government’s swift action in restarting the process of regulating BNPL services.

While acknowledging the convenience of spreading payments interest-free through BNPL, Lewis also criticised how it has often been promoted as a lifestyle choice rather than a form of debt. He emphasised the necessity for firms to be transparent about the nature of BNPL, implement proper affordability checks, and ensure that consumers have recourse to the ombudsman in case of issues.

The implementation of these new regulations is not expected until 2026, and Lewis has advised people to remain cautious until then. The BNPL market has seen significant growth in recent years, particularly due to economic challenges faced by consumers. The new rules will bring BNPL companies under the supervision of the Financial Conduct Authority and the Consumer Credit Act, providing users with clear information, preventing unsustainable borrowing, and establishing stronger consumer rights.

Treasury minister Tulip Siddiq highlighted the importance of these regulations, noting that they address the lack of protection for BNPL users under the previous government. Siddiq emphasised that the government’s actions aim to balance consumer protection with fostering innovation and growth within the sector.

The financial landscape is evolving rapidly, and as BNPL services become more widespread, it is essential for consumers to be well-informed and exercise caution when using these payment options. With the introduction of new regulations, there is hope that consumers will have better protections and increased peace of mind when engaging with BNPL services in the future.
