Britons are leading the trend in Europe when it comes to seeking unregulated alternative therapies, a new study reveals. According to research conducted by Savanta, a market research company, one in five consumers in the UK turn to alternative medicines and mindfulness practices. This percentage is significantly higher compared to other European countries, with only 7% in Italy, 9% in France, and 12% in Germany opting for these alternatives.
The openness of UK consumers towards alternative medicine is believed to be influenced partly by the long waiting times in the NHS and the growing impact of social media. The NHS waiting list reached 7.63 million in August, prompting individuals to explore alternative healthcare options. Additionally, the study shows that 17% of UK consumers prefer seeking medical advice from social media platforms, in contrast to lower percentages in other European countries like Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.
It is important to note that alternative therapies and providers in the UK are not regulated by the Care Quality Commission, highlighting a potential gap in oversight. While social media claims can be regulated by advertising watchdogs, the lack of regulation in the alternative medicine sector raises concerns about the quality and safety of these treatments.
Furthermore, the study conducted by City St. George’s, University of London, uncovered alarming statistics regarding misinformation on social media platforms. Specifically focusing on TikTok, the research found that 81% of cancer cures and treatments promoted in videos on the platform were fake. Dr. Stephanie Baker, who led the research, emphasised the urgent need for stricter regulations to combat the spread of false medical information online.
Commenting on the findings, Louisa Moore, a Senior Consultant at Savanta, highlighted the UK’s receptiveness to alternative healthcare practices and the influence of social media influencers on health decisions. She suggested that the increasing digital solutions being offered online may be attracting individuals seeking immediate healthcare advice in the absence of traditional healthcare options.
As discussions around regulating alternative therapies and combating misinformation on social media continue, it is evident that consumers in the UK are exploring diverse approaches to healthcare. The evolving landscape of healthcare choices underscores the importance of ensuring transparency, credibility, and safety in both traditional and alternative medical practices.
