Lando Norris is gearing up for a tense conclusion to the season as he intensifies his pursuit of the championship title. Heading into the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin, the McLaren driver finds himself trailing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 52 points, with six rounds and 180 points still up for grabs.
Having secured a significant victory at the recent Singapore Grand Prix and chipping away at Verstappen’s lead with 26 points gained over the last four races, Norris acknowledges the mounting pressure and nerves that come with contending for the world championship. Despite being in his sixth season in Formula One, Norris admits he is still acclimating to the heightened scrutiny that comes with being a top title contender.
Reflecting on his championship bid, Norris shared, “Fighting for the championship brings a lot more focus, and we are in a position that we have worked very hard to be in. I am still relaxed, but there is more pressure and a few more nerves, and I am sure it is going to get pretty stressful later in the season and trickier, that is for sure. But I am comfortable, focused on myself, and I am enjoying the moment.”
While Verstappen and Red Bull had a dominating start to the season, the Dutch driver has not tasted victory since the Spanish Grand Prix nearly four months ago. Verstappen himself acknowledges the dwindling odds of retaining his title, now seeing it as a 50-50 chance.
Despite the pressure mounting on Norris to dethrone the current champion, he remains optimistic about McLaren’s progress throughout the season. Starting the year far off the pace, Norris reflects on the team’s significant strides, stating, “I think everyone thought Max was going to have an easy win in the championship and Red Bull were going to have another easy win in the constructors’ championship. For that not to be the case after the gap that they had after round one and it not even to come from Ferrari as the main contender, but from us, a team that was probably fourth at the start of the year, I think it’s still a year to be proud of. And I am confident if we keep our heads down and keep pushing, we can close the gap.”
