Defense lawyers representing Richard Allen, a man accused of murdering two teenage girls in Delphi, Indiana, have argued that his confessions should be disregarded as he was allegedly going through a “mental health crisis” during the trial commencement.
Richard Allen, aged 52, faces charges in connection with the deaths of Abigail “Abby” Williams, 13, and Liberty “Libby” German, 14, whose bodies were discovered close to the Monon High Bridge in Delphi in February 2017. The trial began at the Carroll County Courthouse, with both sides presenting opening statements. Andrew Baldwin, the defense attorney, asserted that Allen’s purported confessions stemmed from a mental health breakdown.
Baldwin stated, “Richard Allen is truly innocent… We want the truth to come out in this courtroom for the families and all of you because it is truly important,” as reported by the Lafayette Journal & Courier. Allen, a local resident of Delphi, was apprehended five years after the incident in October 2022. Despite acknowledging being on the bridge trail when the girls went missing, he pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
Abby and Libby went missing on February 13, 2017, following a hike along the Monon High Bridge Trail. Their lifeless bodies were found the next day in a wooded area near the trail, bearing signs of having had their throats slit. Libby had previously shared images on Snapchat of her and Abby walking along the trail, capturing a video of a man in distinctive clothing.
The defense highlighted issues in the investigation from the beginning, including the loss of key evidence and disputes among investigators. Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland outlined the sequence of events, suggesting the girls complied out of fear with the killer’s commands. McLeland mentioned that Allen had admitted to being at the trail that day, and investigators discovered potential weapons at his residence corresponding to evidence found at the crime scene.
