NHS doctor’s warning about when you should never eat food from a tin

An NHS doctor has issued a warning regarding when you should avoid consuming food from a dented tin due to potential health hazards. Doctor Karan Rajan, also known as Dr Raj, highlighted the dangers of eating food from a tin that has been compromised by damage. In a video shared on TikTok, Dr Raj demonstrated the risks associated with dented cans, showing examples of soups and other commonly tinned foods.

Dr Raj explained that if a dent in the can includes the seam, it could indicate that a small hole has been created, exposing the contents to air and potentially causing the food to spoil. He advised consumers to carefully inspect dented cans by peeling off the label to check for damage along the seam. If a dent is found to involve the seam, he recommended discarding the can as it may have been compromised.

However, if the dent does not affect the seam, the food inside is likely still safe to consume. Dr Raj emphasised the importance of checking for sharp edges or holes created by dents that could pose health risks. He also cautioned against using cans that appear crushed or on the verge of bursting. While not every dented can needs to be thrown away, Dr Raj advised exercising caution and disposing of cans if unsure about their safety.

Consumers were reminded that when in doubt, it is better to err on the side of caution and discard potentially compromised tinned food. By being vigilant and checking for signs of damage, individuals can prevent the risk of consuming spoiled or contaminated food that could lead to illness. The advice provided by Dr Raj serves as a valuable reminder to prioritise food safety when handling dented cans.

Remember, your health is paramount, so always be cautious and proactive in assessing the safety of food stored in damaged tins to safeguard your well-being.
