A second Australian teenager has denied the charge of murdering a British woman during a break-in at her home. The incident took place in North Lakes, Queensland, where Emma Lovell, 41, was fatally stabbed on the Boxing Day holiday in 2022. Reports indicate that the two teenage boys involved in the home invasion attacked Lovell and her husband when they were confronted.
During a judge-only trial, it was revealed that the second defendant, who was 17 years old at the time, did not directly engage in any violent acts. The teenager, whose identity is protected by the law, also pleaded not guilty to charges of armed break-in, malicious acts, and assault that resulted in harm to Lovell’s husband, who was reportedly kicked and stabbed in the back.
The trial will consider whether the teenager shared a common intent to cause harm. The other teenager involved in the incident had previously admitted to the murder earlier in the year and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Justice Tom Sullivan described the murder as particularly heinous, emphasizing that Lovell and her husband were ordinary citizens entitled to feel safe in their home.
Lovell and her husband had moved from Suffolk to Brisbane with their daughters in 2011. The couple was awakened by their dogs barking on the night of the incident and went outside to investigate, where Lovell was fatally stabbed in the heart with an 11.5cm knife.

Despite medics performing open-heart surgery on her front lawn, Lovell passed away shortly after being taken to the hospital.
