Chris Kaba, the man who was shot dead by a police marksman, had recently engaged in a gang rivalry incident at a nightclub just days before his own demise, according to CCTV footage. The video shows Kaba shooting a man in the leg on a crowded dance floor at the Oval Space nightclub in Hackney. The victim, Brandon Malutshi, was wounded in the thigh during the attack. Kaba then pursued Malutshi outside the venue and shot him in the other leg as well. Malutshi was taken to the hospital for treatment but later discharged himself.
Following the nightclub shooting, Kaba was due to stand trial for attempted murder over the incident. However, before the trial took place, Kaba met his own demise at the hands of a police marksman, identified as Martyn Blake. Blake was acquitted of Kaba’s murder after shooting him in Streatham, south London, on 5 September 2022. The police officer’s actions were deemed justified as Kaba had attempted to evade a police stop and posed a threat.
Kaba, known to have affiliations with the Lambeth ’67’ gang, had a history of criminal convictions, including possession of weapons and involvement in violent crimes. His friends Shemiah Bell and Marcus Pottinger were found guilty of wounding with intent in connection to the nightclub shooting, along with Connel Bamgboye. The trio were also convicted of firearm possession with intent to cause fear of violence.
Martyn Blake’s request for anonymity during the trial was challenged by the press, leading to his identity being revealed to the public. Bell received a 10-year jail sentence, Pottinger was sentenced to nine years, and Bamgboye was imprisoned for 5.5 years for their involvement in the nightclub incident.
The fears of potential reprisal attacks from the ’67’ gang were a significant concern following Kaba’s death, leading to heightened security measures.
