Tennis Stars Criticise Decision to Allow In-Game Coaching
Top tennis players are speaking out against the recent decision by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to allow in-game coaching starting in January. World No 6 Taylor Fritz is among those expressing concerns, stating that the change would detract from the one-on-one strategic and mental aspects of the game.
The ITF announced the decision to permit in-game coaching following its annual general meeting, claiming that it would make tennis matches fairer and potentially more entertaining. Off-court coaching had been trialed in all four grand slams as well as on the ATP and WTA tours since 2023.
US Open finalist Fritz had previously criticised off-court coaching, taking to social media to express his disapproval of the rule change, emphasising the importance of maintaining the individual mental and strategic challenges in tennis matches.
Former world No 10 Denis Shapovalov echoed Fritz’s sentiments, describing the decision as “sad to see” for fans of the sport. Shapovalov highlighted the unique nature of tennis, where players compete alone without external assistance, and questioned the rationale behind altering the essence of the game.
ITF senior executive director Stuart Miller defended the decision, stating that it was made following consultations with key stakeholders, including players, coaches, and umpires. Miller explained that players viewed the change positively, finding it made tournaments more engaging for them, while coaches believed it benefitted player development and enhanced their profession’s reputation. Umpires welcomed the decision as it allowed them to focus on monitoring the game rather than policing coaching violations.
Tennis enthusiasts and professionals continue to debate the implications of the ITF’s ruling, with opposing views on how in-game coaching will impact the sport’s integrity and competitive dynamics. As the implementation date approaches, the tennis community awaits further developments and reactions to this significant change in the sport’s regulations.
