A woman in Australia had a harrowing experience when she found herself stuck upside down deep inside a crevice for seven hours after trying to retrieve her phone while bushwalking in Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Matilda Campbell, 23, accidentally dropped her phone into a three-metre-deep crevice and, while attempting to retrieve it, slipped and fell head-first into the crevice, hanging by her feet.
Her friends made initial attempts to pull her out but eventually had to seek reception to call emergency services for help. The Cessnock Volunteer Rescue Association and Rural Fire Service were the first responders on the scene, followed by the police and medics to assist in the rescue operation.
New South Wales (NSW) Ambulance paramedics faced a challenging task in reaching and extracting the woman from her precarious position. Specialist rescue paramedic Peter Watts described the operation as unique in his ten-year career, requiring the removal of heavy boulders and the construction of a stability frame to ensure safety while rescuing the woman.
After several hours of meticulous work, the rescue team successfully freed the woman by removing the boulders with a specialised winch. Mr Watts descended into the crevice to bring her to safety, highlighting the collaborative effort among various agencies to achieve a positive outcome despite the difficult circumstances.
Remarkably, Matilda sustained only minor scratches and bruises during the ordeal and remained calm and cooperative throughout the rescue process. Despite losing her phone in the crevice, she expressed gratitude to the team for saving her life and commended their efforts.
