The number of deaths from wildfire smoke attributed to climate change has escalated from 669 in the 1960s to 12,566 in the 2010s. Although fire-related deaths from air pollution have seen a general increase from 46,401 in the 1960s to 98,748 in the 2010s, it is estimated that around 12,000 of these deaths can be directly linked to climate change.

Regions such as South America, Australia, and Europe have witnessed the most significant rises in wildfire-related deaths linked to climate change. This surge has been attributed to decreased humidity in certain regions and rising temperatures in boreal forests. On the other hand, South Asia has experienced a decrease in deaths due to increasing humidity levels.

The lead author of the research, Chae Yeon Park, from the Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, has noted that the findings indicate a growing threat to public health posed by climate change. The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, utilised pollution models and health risk assessments to directly link emissions deaths to climate change.

Smoke from wildfires, containing hazardous pollutants, produces PM2.5 particles that can have severe health implications when inhaled. Exposure to PM2.5 has been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular issues, including premature death, irregular heartbeat, aggravated asthma, and decreased lung function. Vulnerable groups such as those with heart and lung conditions, older adults, children, and low socioeconomic populations are most at risk from this pollution.
