Dumfries and Galloway rail services are on the brink of returning to normalcy as train drivers have agreed to a new pay deal, marking a significant step towards resolving the ongoing dispute. The acceptance of the pay deal by members of the train drivers’ union Aslef, believed to be around 4.5 per cent and backdated to April, could pave the way for regular train services to resume in the region.
The temporary timetable that was implemented by ScotRail in July due to the shortage of drivers available for overtime or rest day working could soon be a thing of the past. This temporary timetable had led to reduced services, with trains from Glasgow and Carlisle to Dumfries operating on an adjusted schedule.
With Aslef joining Unite and the RMT in accepting the pay offer, there is optimism that a full timetable could be reinstated in the near future, bringing relief to commuters in Dumfries and Galloway. Aslef Scotland organiser Kevin Lindsay expressed satisfaction with the resolution, highlighting the determination of members to secure a fair deal for themselves and their families.
Lindsay emphasised the importance of recognising the contribution of railway workers and expressed gratitude to ScotRail and the Scottish Government for acknowledging the value of their members in ensuring the smooth functioning of Scotland’s rail services. According to the ScotRail website, the temporary timetable is set to remain in effect until at least Sunday, October 6. The news of the agreement between Aslef and ScotRail brings a ray of hope for the region, as the prospect of a return to normal rail operations seems within reach.
