Instant porridge brand withdrawn in South Africa after three children die

An instant porridge brand in South Africa has been withdrawn from shelves after the tragic deaths of three children. Namib Mills, a Namibian food company, is currently investigating the incident following the children’s deaths in Eastern Cape, South Africa. The children, aged between 18 months and four years, reportedly consumed the Top Score Instant Porridge and later complained of stomach aches before passing away on Friday.

Lt Col Siphokazi Mawisa, a police spokesperson, stated that the exact cause of death is still unknown. Authorities took action by visiting the supermarket where the porridge was sold, closing it temporarily, and confiscating all batches of the product. Samples will be sent to the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) for microbiological and chemical testing to determine any potential issues.

Marne Bouwer, a senior brand manager at Namib Mills, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and offered condolences to the affected families. She emphasised the company’s commitment to consumer safety and stated that while there is currently no evidence connecting their product to the tragic event, they are treating the matter seriously. Namib Mills has initiated an internal investigation to ensure transparency and full cooperation with relevant authorities.

Reports from The Citizen newspaper mentioned that the children may have passed away from suspected food poisoning after consuming the instant porridge. A fourth child, aged 7, was discharged in stable condition with further tests planned for assessment. The products were purchased from a Spar supermarket branch in the Eastern Cape, which has since removed the item from sale and is collaborating with the police inquiry.

Spar confirmed that all stock of the product at their distribution centres in South Africa has been identified and put on hold pending the investigation’s outcome. The company reiterated its commitment to prioritising consumer safety and conducting a thorough internal investigation to address any potential concerns. The tragic incident has sparked a wave of concern and underscores the importance of stringent food safety measures in protecting consumers, especially vulnerable groups like children.
