An Ohio mother has been found guilty of endangering her children after leaving them home alone to go on a vacation to Miami. Dominique Knowles faced two counts of endangering children charges after leaving her 7-year-old twin daughters and 10-year-old daughter alone for three days in February while she traveled to Florida.
A teacher, concerned about the children’s well-being, requested a welfare check. Upon officers’ arrival at Knowles’ apartment on February 22, they discovered the unit in a state of disarray with garbage, bins, and bags strewn across the floor, according to court records. The children informed the officers that they did not have a phone to contact their mother, although she had been communicating with them through Nest cameras and FaceTime on a MacBook tablet. However, the tablet was not charged or operational when the officers arrived.
Knowles was arrested upon her return, where she refused to disclose her whereabouts to the police during the interview. Subpoenaed cell phone records revealed that she had made or received 50 calls in Florida between February 21 to February 23. Knowles claimed she went to Miami to support a friend undergoing liposuction surgery without informing her mother and friend about her travel plans.
During her sentencing hearing, Knowles expressed remorse, acknowledging that her actions were wrong and promised that it would never happen again. She opted against a jury trial and was found guilty by Judge Joseph T Burke of the Rocky River Municipal Court. Judge Burke highlighted the potential dangers the children faced in her absence, emphasizing the importance of a mother’s physical presence in raising children and not merely supervising them remotely.
Knowles was sentenced to five years probation, mandatory parenting classes, mental health counseling, $800 in fines, and 360 days of house arrest with exceptions for work. Judge Burke stressed the importance for Knowles to step up and become the mother her daughters deserve. He highlighted the importance of physical presence in parenting rather than relying on remote means.
