Cats Might Be Learning Words Faster Than Human Babies, a Study Suggests
A recent study has found that cats could be learning words more quickly than human babies. Felines, who have been living alongside humans for over 12,000 years, appear to have closely observed our communication patterns, according to experts. The study indicates that these pets have the ability to connect words with specific objects or images at a faster pace than infants do.
Previous research has shown that cats have various cognitive capabilities. They can understand human pointing gestures, recognise their names, and distinguish familiar cats and people. The research, led by Saho Takagi, a cognitive scientist from Abazu University in Japan and the study’s lead author, suggests that cats may be inherently predisposed to learning elements of human language.
Mr Takagi expressed his surprise at the findings, stating that cats seemed to be able to comprehend words from human conversations without the need for specific reward-based training. The study sought to investigate whether cats learn human words in a similar manner to dogs. To explore this further, Mr Takagi and his team conducted an experiment using techniques commonly used to study language development in 14-month-old human babies.
In the study, 31 adult pet cats were each positioned in front of a laptop displaying two short cartoon animations while an audio track played, featuring their caregiver saying a fictitious word. The researchers observed that most cats habituated to the stimulus pairings after just four trials, a process significantly quicker than what is typically seen in infants of a similar age.
During another phase of the experiment, when half of the audio clips did not match the displayed images, the cats exhibited signs of confusion, spending approximately 33% more time looking at the screen when they detected a mismatch between the word and the image. These results suggest that cats have the ability to rapidly form associations between pictures and words, with some cats even exhibiting dilated pupils while focusing on the screen during altered conditions.
While the study highlights the cognitive abilities of cats, experts stress that further research is required to ascertain whether these capabilities are unique to cats or are shared among various species.
