A new booklet has been launched to assist older individuals in the Stirling area in accessing advice and services. Developed by Stirling Council’s Community Development team, the 12-page brochure serves as a self-help guide for seniors to uphold their independence and make informed choices in their lives. The launch of this booklet coincides with the International Day of Older People. Created in collaboration with various local organisations such as the Clackmannanshire and Stirling Health & Social Care Partnership, NHS Forth Valley, and local charities, the booklet covers a wide range of topics including benefits advice, legal matters, health information, volunteering opportunities, social connections, and home safety tips.
Available for download and in print form, the booklet can be obtained from community centres, Stirling Citizens Advice Bureau, libraries, health centres, community hospitals, housing association partners, and the MECS social care team. Additionally, copies will be distributed at upcoming roadshows conducted by the Community Development Team and its partners, who plan to visit older people’s groups, activity hubs, and lunch clubs in the following months.
Councillor Elaine Watterson, Stirling Council’s Older People’s Champion, visited the Balfron Lunch Club to introduce the booklet, accompanied by members of the Community Development Team who offered guidance and assistance. Cllr Watterson emphasised the importance of considering the needs and challenges faced by older people in the provision of services. With an estimated 25,000 individuals over 60 years old in the Stirling Council area, feedback gathered during the roadshows will inform future editions of the booklet and influence the development of other services.
The Community Development Team is particularly interested in gathering data on issues such as isolation, loneliness, housing adaptations, care requirements, and financial worries. Organizations catering to older individuals who wish to host a roadshow can contact the Community Development Team via email at communitydevelopment@stirling.gov.uk. Stirling’s Council Advice Services team also offers advice on benefits entitlement for older people, with assessments available to determine eligibility for benefits like Pension Credit, which can open doors to additional support.
Overall, the booklet aims to guide older individuals in Stirling towards support services and organisations that can directly enhance their ability to lead independent, healthy, and fulfilling lives. It acknowledges the valuable contributions of community organisations and volunteers in providing essential support to older residents. As the population of older individuals continues to grow, initiatives like this booklet play a crucial role in ensuring their well-being and quality of life.
