A tragic incident occurred in Crete, where a British tourist, aged 71, lost her life after feeling unwell while swimming in the sea at a popular holiday destination. The woman tragically passed away following the incident on Monday in Agia Galini, one of the largest seaside towns in Crete situated on the southern coast.
According to a report by Cretapost, the woman had gone for a swim around midday when she suddenly felt unwell. Details about the specific illness she was experiencing remain undisclosed. After feeling unwell, she was swiftly brought back to the shore but unfortunately collapsed. Despite the efforts of medics at the scene to revive her, they were unable to do so.
Following the incident, the tourist was rushed to Rethymnon Hospital in the local area, where she was later pronounced dead. The Port Authority of Agia Galini is currently conducting a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with further information pending.
This unfortunate event comes in the wake of several other British tourist fatalities in Greece this summer. In July, a 66-year-old woman was rescued from the water at Achladies beach on Skiathos after losing consciousness while swimming during a period of extreme heat. Meanwhile, in April, another British tourist lost his life during a boat trip from Kos, as he tragically drowned in front of his wife while attempting to re-board the boat.
Moreover, Greece has also experienced heat-related deaths this year, including the passing of author and presenter Dr. Michael Mosley, who was discovered deceased after a five-day search on the island of Symi in June.
