Laura Whitmore has responded following the BBC’s release of the findings from the investigation into Giovanni Pernice’s conduct on Strictly Come Dancing. The inquiry resulted in an apology to actor Amanda Abbington for early exit from the competition due to verbal bullying and harassment. Abbington had raised concerns about her treatment while partnered with Pernice during the 2023 season. The investigation concluded that although Pernice, who departed from Strictly this year, was not physically aggressive towards his dance partners.
Whitmore, who partnered with Pernice on the show in 2016, was among those who provided input to the BBC during the investigation. She took to Instagram with a message stating, “I hope this helps people realise they should not be subjected to abusive behaviour in the workplace.” The BBC acknowledged some of the complaints raised and stated, “Strictly Come Dancing is a family show and we rightly expect very high standards.” The broadcaster apologised to Abbington and commended her for coming forward.
A spokesperson for Pernice expressed his relief that the report did not find evidence of threatening or abusive behaviour by him. Abbington welcomed the apology, viewing it as a validation of her complaint and a step towards encouraging others to speak out about their experiences. Ranvir Singh, who danced with Pernice in 2020, also shared her satisfaction with the outcome, particularly the apology to Abbington.
Whitmore had previously disclosed concerns about her experience on Strictly in 2016 and emphasised the need for accountability to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. She had openly discussed the emotional and physical toll her time on the show had taken on her.
