Born on October 10, 1948, Laughlin began his career as a reporter for the Taunton Daily Gazette in Massachusetts in 1971. He joined The Associated Press in Boston in 1976 before becoming the correspondent in charge of the Providence office from 1979 to 1982. During his tenure, he covered high-profile cases such as the trial of socialite Claus von Bulow.
In 1988, Laughlin returned to New England as the chief of bureau for northern New England, based in Concord, New Hampshire. He led AP’s news operations in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire until his retirement in 2009. Notably, Laughlin oversaw coverage of five first-in-the-nation presidential primaries and collaborated on projects like “New Hampshire Voters’ Voice” to provide insightful political coverage.
