Brexit campaigner stands in Falkirk by-election for Reform party
Stuart Martin, a Brexit campaigner, is one of seven candidates vying for a seat on Falkirk Council in the upcoming Falkirk South by-election on October 17. Representing the Reform UK party, Martin aims to succeed Labour’s Euan Stainbank, who vacated his position on Falkirk Council after winning a parliamentary seat in Falkirk.
A resident of Bonnybridge and a self-employed taxi driver, Mr. Martin brings prior experience in various elections at the council, Holyrood, and Westminster levels. His political journey began with the Conservatives before transitioning to UKIP for its pro-Brexit stance. Following UKIP’s achievement in steering the UK out of the EU, Martin felt a shift to Reform UK was fitting due to perceived lost momentum.
Despite not residing in Falkirk South, Martin showcases awareness of local concerns such as litter concerns, youth issues, road improvements, and strong opposition to proposed reductions in the school week in Falkirk, describing them as “deplorable.” Additionally, he criticises the demolition of Callendar Square shopping centre to make way for a new town hall, citing that the existing building could have been repurposed instead of being razed.
Expressing a desire for change, Martin emphasises a need to move beyond the stagnation he perceives from established parties, asserting that Falkirk Council requires dedicated action for local needs instead of political posturing. Alongside Martin, six other candidates are contending in the election, including the SNP’s Carol Beattie, Labour’s Claire Aitken, former councillor David Grant from the Scottish Conservative & Unionist Party, independent campaigner Sharron McKean, Scottish Greens candidate Tom McLaughlin, and Liberal Democrats representative Sean McCay.
The diverse pool of candidates offers Falkirk voters a range of choices, each with their own background and visions for the local community.
