Green light for stonework repairs at historic Sheriff Court building in Ayr

Council planners have approved plans for stonework repairs at the historic Ayr Sheriff Court. In August, safety measures were implemented after workmen discovered an “immediate risk of falling masonry.” Scaffolding was erected at the 202-year-old building in Wellington Square due to corroded stonework and potential structural issues. The Scottish Court Service submitted a planning application to South Ayrshire Council seeking consent for remedial works, including the removal and replacement of stones and features to ensure safety.

The proposals have now been given the green light for the repair work. The architects involved, Michael Laurie Architects Ltd, highlighted concerns about the cornice above the main entrance, noting cracks and failures in certain areas. The Wellington Square elevation faces significant corrosion and structural challenges, prompting the need for remedial actions to prevent any harm to the public or building occupants. The Scottish Court Service plans to carry out a series of repairs and restoration efforts on the stonework.

Ayr Sheriff Court, designed by architect Robert Wallace, saw the foundation stone laid in 1818, with completion in 1822 at a cost exceeding £30,000. The recent approval by the council emphasised the importance of conserving the building’s historical elements. The proposed works aim to address the deteriorating stonework, mullions, and lintels to maintain the original appearance of the listed building. The application received praise for sound repair practices and the preservation of the building’s integrity.

In light of the approval, the focus now shifts to executing the necessary repairs to ensure the stability and safety of the Ayr Sheriff Court.
