More than 500 donations have been contributed to the Monklands Christmas Toy Appeal, showcasing the incredible generosity of the community in Airdrie and Coatbridge. The annual appeal, now in its 12th year, has successfully collected 14,000 gifts, which are being distributed to families in need through volunteer groups in time for Christmas morning. This year, around 500 gifts have been donated so far, with additional contributions expected.
To facilitate donations, various collection points were established at supermarkets in Airdrie and Coatbridge, including Morrisons, Tesco, and Asda. These gifts are intended for local children and young people aged from birth to 18. Norbert Grant, the toy appeal co-ordinator, expressed his delight at the overwhelming support, highlighting the efforts of community groups, organisations, and schools involved in the distribution process.
One notable contribution came from a new business called Sense of Wonder, which donated 50 gifts collected from parents attending their classes, further enhancing the quantity of toys available this year. Additionally, RCM Recovery from Wishaw provided essential storage facilities and assisted with pick-up and drop-offs as needed. The team at Laing O’Rourke, the construction partner for the new Monklands Hospital, also contributed significantly to the appeal.
Acknowledgements were extended to the shoppers and staff of Asda, Morrisons, and Tesco superstores in Airdrie for their dedicated support in organising the donation drive. Grant emphasised the collaborative efforts of volunteers working tirelessly to ensure that no family misses out on the joy of Christmas this year.
